The Handmaiden's Tale

Well, isn't this nice. We'll all be "pre-pregnant." We won't be allowed to smoke or drink, because doing those things (especially before we know we're pregnant) might harm the fetus. The potential baby. That we may not decide to keep. But, of course, if the Bush administrations has anything to do with it, that choice will be up to God and The Holy United States Government.

No, it's better for everybody if we all tip-toe around, watching our weight (fat women have pregnancy complications, you know--and besides, who wants to look at grotesque piggies everywhere?), not smoking or drinking, gulping down our vitamins, and obeying our husbands like good little girls.

I'm not saying that pre-conception healthcare isn't important for women who are planning to get pregnant. But for the rest of us, I think that an emphasis on fucking goddamn BIRTH CONTROL may be more helpful. Not "pre-conception" health screening for all women between the ages of 13 and 55. The little aside that they stuck in about making more of an effort to provide minority women with healthcare is a miniscule step in the right direction, but they've buried it beneath a avalanche of frighteningly invasive shit recommendations.

No mention of minority mens' healthcare, or ideas on how to improve their effectiveness at childrearing--they're all in prison anyway.

Does any of this seem to be adding up to ya'll? Defense of marriage act. Then no abortion. Now the CDC says that all women are basically walking baby-machines, and should be treated as such by the government and their healthcare providers.

Pay close attention to the mention of "interventions" in the CDC report. I wonder what they mean?

Just remember that all those little ova are sitting there, patiently waiting for some enterprising young sperm to get past the gauntlet.
Pickling the little sweeties is probably not a good idea. Moderation in all things, except, perhaps, learning. I don't think anyone yet has found that stuffing your brain with interesting shit has any negative consequences. Divulging it to every passerby, well, that's a different story.
And what did he say? Where is my info? >>>>Guilt>>>>Guilt>>>Guilt>>> (Those are guilt-waves, by the way-- heading your way. A quick response will cause them to disapait over the heartland. CYEM.

yeah. the emphasis on women as baby-makers is destructive not only because it's sexist, but also because it will encourage women to have alot of babies. and that's the last thing we need.

allow me to reiterate my favorite example of this:

in africa, where there are lots of babies, we have...aids and genocide.

in italy, where the birth rate has been on a steady decline in recent years, we have...spaghetti and culture. (OK...and a few other things, like the parmalat scandal and a recession, but i think we can all agree that these things are easier to deal with than aids)

Ma-
I sent ya an email! Pull back the guilt tendrils! Please, for the love of god! *sinks slowly beneath the surface of a guilt-sea*

He says yes, so the 20th to the 25th is on. Are you sure Papooh is okay with this?

Andrew-
I'm not going to even MENTION colonialism. I swear. And hey, what's the parmalat scandal? Aren't those milk people?

the parmalat scandal is a long story, and i forgot exactly what happened. just that it was a big deal and the prime minister was involved (i think it was berlusconi, actually).
and *OK*, maybe colonialism contributed a LITTLE to Africa's problems. but the residual problems that colonialism caused would not be felt so strongly were there fewer people to stretch the already limited resources.
and the aids is pretty much exclusively the babies' faults. you can't deny that.
